As a parent, I love to look at my own kids’ arts and crafts and see their little handprints and fingerprints.  To compare them to the size of their hands and fingers now, makes me smile and remember when they were “that little.”

Here are a few of my favorite crafts made with handprints and fingerprints.  I used pizza boxes as our canvases, but you could use regular canvases, paper, or whatever you like.

FINGERPRINT BUGS:

  • Canvases painted blue
  • Various colors of paint
  • Black marker

Squirt or pour each paint onto a separate paper or foam plate.  Guide students in dipping a finger into the paint and placing fingerprints on the canvas.  Allow the paint to dry.  Use a marker to add the details.

Handprint Fish:

  • Canvases painted blue
  • Various colors of paint
  • Sponge brush
  • Black marker
  • Blue marker
  • Green marker
  • Googly eyes

Allow each student to choose a color of paint.  Use the sponge to brush the paint onto the child’s hand a guide him to place a handprint onto the canvas.  Allow to dry.  Use the blue marker to draw bubbles as shown.  Use the green marker to add seaweed as shown.  Use the black marker to add details to the fish.  Add google eyes.

Handprint Octopus:

  • Canvases painted blue
  • Purple paint
  • Sponge brush
  • Blue marker
  • Green marker
  • Black marker
  • Googly eyes

Use the sponge to paint each child’s hand and guide him in placing a handprint on the canvas.  Use the edge of the sponge brush to add the extra tentacles.   Allow to dry.  Use the blue marker to add bubbles.  Use the green marker to draw seaweed.  Use the black marker to add a mouth and suction cups to the tentacles.  Add googly eyes.

Handprint Frogs:

  • Canvases painted blue
  • Green paint
  • Sponge brush
  • Black paint
  • Black marker
  • Googly eyes

Use the sponge to paint each child’s hand, excluding the thumb.  Guide him in placing a handprint onto the canvas.  Have the child dip a thumb into black paint and guide him in placing a thumbprint onto the canvas where the fly will be.  Allow to dry.  Use the black marker to add the details to the frog’s face and the wings and flight path to the fly.  You can use white paint to add color to the wings, if you’d like.  Add the googly eyes.

Handprint Owls:

  • Canvases painted dark blue
  • Brown paint
  • Black paint
  • Green paint
  • Orange paint
  • Light brown paint
  • Silver glitter glue
  • Googly eyes

Use the sponge to paint each child’s hand brown.  Guide him in placing a handprint onto the canvas.  Allow to dry.  Draw the limb with black paint and the leaves with green paint.  Add the beak with orange paint and the feet with light brown paint.  Use the glitter glue to draw a crescent moon.  Add the googly eyes.

 

*For googly eyes, I use 1-inch white labels and 1/2-inch black labels.
